Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and the practice of philosophy

Logic-based Therapy and Consulting (LBT/C) is a therapeutic method designed by philosopher Elliot D. Cohen, and inspired by the work of psychologist, Dr. Albert Ellis, creator of Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy.

LBT/C integrates the strengths of an evidence-based, high-efficacy psychological approach with the strengths of philosophy training. Reason, emotion, personal beliefs, values, and behaviors are examined and realigned for a highly individualized approach for each client to live authentically and confidently.

LBT/C offers long-lasting, transformative results because it uses a 6-step method to critically identify the specific core beliefs holding you back from self-understanding, peace of mind and living from your authentic values.

In our work together, we will:

  • Identify the underlying fallacies at the root of your distress
  • Critically examine and replace unhelpful, unrealistic and self-defeating beliefs with constructive, supportive, realistic and rational beliefs
  • Learn about the path to well-being and happiness, which lies in virtue-based aspirations
  • Create a plan of action uniquely suited to you,  supported by a philosophy to help you make lasting changes toward the authentic and happy life you seek

Some Questions Answered

What is Logic-Based Therapy & Consulting?

Logic-based Therapy and Consulting is a 6-step therapeutic method grounded in evidence-based (and highly effective!) psychology along with the humanistic approach of philosophy.

An LBT-therapist has a speciality in philosophy, and is a licensed therapist.

An LBT-consultant is a professional philosopher with certified training in the LBT model.

How does LBTC differ from psychotherapy?

LBT/C is primarily concerned with addressing issues in everyday life in the present, helping clients to clarify their thinking, and reorienting their behavior toward more rational, autonomous, and authentic living in the present and future.

LBT/C does not treat mental health conditions, such as trauma or major depression. Psychotherapy is better equipped for addressing the medical and biological causes underlying some serious psychological and psychiatric conditions.

What can you help me with?

I can help you with a variety of issues pertaining to everyday life. Some examples include everyday frustrations, procrastination, concern with others’ opinions, etc. A longer sample of issues that we can work on can be found here.

I would turn this question around and focus less on the individual issues we can constructively address, and instead focus on the cognitive and behaviorial skills, as well as personal development, you can expect from LBT. What you will learn about your mind, emotions and self can be applied to many life circumstances beyond the issue you come in for. It’s a “teach a man to fish” model, which fosters confidence in clients to continue self-improvement and self-empowerment long after our sessions have ended.

My job is not to help you merely cope with challenges, but to learn to face life with authenticity, autonomy, and self-awareness.

What can I expect from our consulting sessions?

I guide my clients through 6 distinct steps unique to Logic-Based Therapy. Depending on how long each steps takes us, clients may need between 1-5 1-hour sessions to complete the process. By the end, you we will have discovered the core self-defeating beliefs that are holding you back in the issue you wish to address, we will work to refute these problematic beliefs with more reasonable and realistic ones that serve you. We will work on reorienting your aim from a self-defeating one to a virtuous one that contributes to your well-being and strength of character. At each step, I ensure that you are aligned with your authentic values and worldview.

Are you a therapist? What are your credentials?

I am a professionally trained philosopher with a Phd and Certified Logic-Based Therapy Consultant.

I have been a college instructor for over a decade, specializing in Ancient Greek Philosophy and Virtue Theory. I am particularly interested in the theme of self-cultivation, and love studying Western, as well as Eastern, approaches to this question of how to live well, and how to be the best version of myself (and what that even means!).

I am not a therapist, nor medical doctor. As such, I will not evaluate, diagnose, nor treat mental health conditions.

My credentials are:

  • Certified Logic-Based Consultant, Logic-Based Therapy and Consulting Institute
  • Member, National Philosophical Counseling Association
  • Member, American Philosophical Association
  • PhD in Philosophy, Stony Brook University
  • MA in Philosophy, San Francisco State University
  • BA in Legal Studies, UC Berkeley

Do you practice LBT on yourself too?

Yes, I do apply LBT to myself! In fact, that’s a requirement of practice. As an LBT Consultant, I practice what I preach.

I know first hand how challenging it is to make lasting behavioral changes, and to come face to face with irrational beliefs that must be confronted.

I’m here as your “guide from the side,” not “sage on the stage.” I won’t be telling you to think or believe anything that does not align with your values. That’s why LBT works–the solutions ultimately come from you, the client.
